Britney Spears just sung live for the first time in forever and she was really quite good actually.
Britney Spears singing live is a phrase that we’re becoming increasingly used to hearing used in the early 2000s exclusively, but Brit Brit is obviously feeling her oats and getting itchy feet right now, because she took to her Vegas stage and decided to cover Bonnie Rait’s “Something to Talk About” .
And, not only did she give a candid, tongue-in-cheek explanation that ‘holding a microphone in my hand feels kind of illegal‘, she went on to tell her audience she keeps it real by ‘giving you motherfuckers something to talk about’, launching into singing a song live on stage for the first time in several years like it wasn’t the most important thing to happen to pop music since Ariana Grande licked a donut.
What’s more, the cover was not just good, it was like, late 90s soulful Britney good. Her voice has thinned over the years, but she proves she’s still got the pipes to deliver a classic with impressive dynamism. Perhaps the live performance is not totally unexpected, after Britney sung Happy Birthday live on stage in recent weeks and repeatedly claimed on her mini world tour that she does, in fact, sing live on her shows, but that it’s mixed in with playback (aka completely drowned out by playback). Either way, blessed be to the pop gods for Brit Brit having the balls to sing live again! Yay!
